Trained and certified in several focuses, both Patti and Tim are experienced counselors able to treat several types of issues. From Sexual Addiction to Brainspotting, Works of Heart Counseling will be able to help you embrace your beauty and find your inner strength.
Sex Addiction
Sexual Addiction is on the rise in our culture and is defined as any sexually-related, compulsive behavior which interferes with normal living, creating severe stress on family, friends, loved ones, and one’s work environment. Denial causes the sex addict to minimize, rationalize, and justify the problem, the consequences, and/or the devastation caused to others. We know that many sexual addictions arise from early childhood trauma. I believe that Family of Origin (childhood abuse/trauma) is relapse prevention; therefore, my treatment includes working on trauma and family issues from the past.
Trauma
Trauma is stored in our brains and causes us to respond in ways that interrupt our normal life activities, such as startle responses, hyper-vigilance, depression, and other symptoms. I believe that talking and EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, are healing and paths to living life again in happiness and peace.
F.o.O.
F.o.O. or Family of Origin is the family that we lived in, the system that was established, the norms that were within the home, and other characteristics that sometimes caused abuse and the development of core beliefs, some good and some harmful. I am trained in and work with clients to understand this and how it negatively, as well as positively, affects our adult lives.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapeutic approach developed by Francine Shapiro. It is one of the most widely investigated treatments for PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). It is a time-efficient, comprehensive methodology for the treatment of the disturbing experiences that underlie numerous pathologies.
“Disturbing events can be stored in the brain in an isolated memory network. This prevents learning from taking place. The old material just keeps getting triggered over and over again. In another part of your brain, in a separate network, is most of the information you needed to resolve it. It’s just prevented from linking up to the old stuff. Once EMDR is started, the networks can line up. New information can come to mind and resolve the old problems.” (Shapiro, 2001)
EMDR has been used extensively and effectively with children. There are parallels between negative childhood experience and that of a trauma victim. In both, there are feelings of self-blame and inadequacy and a lack of control, safety, or choices. During the 3-4 day HART we may use this approach as a tool to aid you in your assent to recovery.
Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/physical pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment, enhanced with Biolateral sound, which is deep, direct, and powerful, yet focused and containing.
